How To Get Good At Madden 23: 3 Easy Steps
The 3 Step Guide For How To Get Good At Madden 23:
- Pre-snap reads: Do they have 1 or 2 high safeties? If it is only 1 you know it will be Cover 1 or Cover 3.
- During the play reads: Identify what zone drops they are using.
- After the play ends: Survey the whole field
Tough Love
You will fail at Madden and not have fun if you do not take the time to understand the importance of reading coverages.
Woah. Yeah… I will not hold back because reading defenses is crucial to your success.
1. Pre-Snap Reads
For beginners, pre-snap reads are 10x more important than the other two. Why?
It is only when you get into the top 25% of players where they start disguising defenses.
A huge secret is when an outside cornerback is lined up inside your outside receiver, it will be man coverage.
If not, then it is zone.
Me and other competitive players call these “tells”.
Tells are how you can identify what someone is doing by seeing where a player is positioned pre-snap.
Then if someone has only one safety high, it is a tell for Cover 3.
If it is one safety high and the cornerbacks are lined up inside your outside receivers, then it is Cover 1.
2. During The Play Reads
What everyone else will tell you is, “just read the outside cornerback in .1238 seconds and see if he blah blah blah.”
Look, I have trained over 800 beginners in 12 years. I used to give that advice and it never stuck.
It was too difficult and not as useful as what I am about to tell you.
Instead of all that non-sense, read throughout the play what zone drops they are using.
That way you don’t have to stress over what the outside C.B. did in the first 0.247 seconds.
Ask yourself, are they dropping any flat zones back 25 or 30 yards?
If not, you can attack those deeper portions of the field with crossers or corners.
To make it even easier to read coverages, I invented an a system called “The 9 Spaces Of The Field”.
Reading coverages is 1 of the 12 fundamentals you must understand if you want to be competitive.
3. After The Play Ends:
This is your time to cheat.
There is a 1 second window after a play is completed before they bring you back to the playcall screen.
Use that window to discover what the defense was actually doing.
Were you right about what depth (10,20,30?) their flat zones were at?
Or was that flat zone you thought was a flat was a deep blue instead?
Remember if you are the 50, a flat zone can only go back 30 yards. So if you see an outside cornerback run past the 20 yard line, you know it was a deep blue.
Your Urgent Next Step:
Now that you have been introduced to reading defenses, next is knowing how to attack those defenses.
There is zero point of reading the defense if you don’t know how to attack certain defenses.
