Your Inability To Read Coverages Is Sabotaging Your Offense
Your Offense Is Being Held Back
Everyone had that one kid in their grade who got held back because they failed to work to understand the basics of their Math or English class. You did not need to be super proficient in the subject area to get an average or even passing grade. You just needed to put in enough work to get the fundamentals down.
This is the spot you are in right now. I applaud you for taking the time to read this blog to educate yourself on one of the most fundamental aspects of Madden: reading coverages. To be blunt, you will fail at Madden and not have fun especially when you climb the ranks if you do not take time to understand the importance of reading coverages.
Pre-snap reads are so important because they give you that “tell” before the play as to where the defense is going to be weak. Imagine if you consistently knew before the play what your opponent was doing based on how his defense aligned? 99% of players would think you are cheating. Mastering this concept alone would give you bragging rights over your friends or rivals.
The post-snap reads are what guide your play-calling on upcoming plays. At the snap of the ball, you should be reading one half of the field every time (specifically the safety and cornerback) so you know for future reference what the defense is doing. Once you know what the defense is doing, then it’s about understanding which route concepts attack those coverages.
